Half Moon Saguaro - 2003

Half Moon Saguaro

Even a week after a winter storm, this saguaro in the Eagletail Mountain Wilderness hasn’t quite soaked up enough water to completely fatten up. Accordion like, these giant cactus swell up as they store water to survive the intense summer heat. That’s why the lower portion of this one is larger than the top. Myths aside, you can’t cut one of these open and drink the stored water but birds and rodents love to live in the cavities because the temperature can be 40 degrees cooler than the hot summer air outside.
