Eagletail Peak - 2003

Eagletail Peak

This is Eagletail Peak, the namesake and highest point in the Eagletail Mountains Wilderness. With the pinnacles only rising 3000 feet, it’s not a giant snow-capped mountain like you would find in the Sierras or Rockies, but the four fingers or feathers, making up the summit, tower above the Harquahala Plains.

About an hour west of Phoenix off of Interstate 10, the Eagletail Range looks like a bunch of hills along the side of the road. That is, until you hike up into them. Then, you can begin to see the colors of tapioca, butterscotch and chocolate in the cliffs and rock faces. If you go, take lots of water . . . and maybe some Jell-O Pudding.
