Jerome Irises - 2004

Jerome Irises

Jerome is an Arizona town who's hey day was in the early twentieth century. The town was a mining camp that has run dry. Now Jerome is considered a ghost town despite a growing eclectic population. Perched precariously on the side of Mingus Mountain, most of the original homes have succumbed to gravity and have been torn down before they could migrate further down the mountainside.

During my visit this spring, irises were growing everywhere decorating walls and yards that no longer existed. I found this bunch along a back street at the edge of town. I liked how the spring blooms contrasted with the stained and decaying retaining wall.
